Mars One Gets Over 100,000 Sign Ups
Is life on earth so bad, that you would want to make a quick break for it and head off to the Red Planet? If you have answered in the affirmative, think it not that you are some sort of weirdo, as there is a growing number of folks – numbering more than 100,000 already, who have applied with the Mars One project, where they would leave earth permanently and help to colonize Mars. CNN reported that more than 100,000 people have already sent in their applications to Mars One. Mars One happens to be an organization that intends to establish a permanent human colony by the year 2023, and it seems that the dateline is way too close for comfort (to me, at least).
Mars One intends to send a few groups of four people each in order to create a human presence on Mars, but they will have to be permanent residents there, on a one way ticket. CNN quoted Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp, “There is also a very large number of people who are still working on their profile, so either they have decided not to pay the application fee or they are still making their video or they’re still filling out the questionnaire or their resume. So the people that you can see online are only the ones that have finished and who have set their profiles as public.” Hmmm, the gene pool is going to be really limited there though in the beginning, don’t you think so?
