Much of the rumor mill is consumed with iPhone 5S rumors and speculation right now, after all, Apple is going to release a new smartphone in the near future after almost one full year. Lets look ahead though, into the future, the very distant future to be precise. An iPhone 6 mockup created by Claudio Guglieri shows a wrap-around display. Basically the iPhone shown in this concept does not have a bezel, instead the display literally wraps around the sides, offering greater real estate for apps as well as increased viewing area for the users.
Since this is after all a concept, we can’t form a notion right now that the iPhone Apple will release next year, which is expected to have major improvements, will have such a display. Though its not like Apple hasn’t thought about wrap-around displays at all. Back in March 2013 the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published a new patent filing from Apple that detailed, you guessed it, a smartphone with a wrap-around display. In this case, the display would eliminate all physical buttons on the sides, so functions related to these buttons such as volume adjustment and orientation lock/mute would have to be achieved through virtual buttons. The device will also need a sophisticated system that knows what touch to register and when, since the entire device is effectively a big touchscreen. Lets not forget though that not all patented technologies see the light of day, so even if Apple has researched on wrap-around displays, one can’t be sure if future devices will tout them. It makes for a cool concept, nonetheless.
