Comcast Said To Be Readying New Anti-Piracy Strategy

There has been much debate on ways to curb online piracy, but no one seems to have come up with a concrete solution up till now. For the people who make movies, TV shows and music, piracy is a big problem. Rumor has it that Comcast is readying a new strategy so as to drive down the rate of pirated movies and TV shows being downloaded. Variety, citing unnamed sources, claims that Comcast’s strategy is to display links to legally buy or rent movies or TV shows that a user is attempting to download illegally. This would mean that those users will actually have to pay for whatever they wish to download, the price they pay will not only be for the content itself, it will also be for upholding the law.

This new strategy is radically different from the Copyright Alert System that’s currently in place. User’s indulging in online piracy receive notices from their ISP, if they ignore them continuously, their accounts may be suspended or the ISP may throttle their internet speed. Comcast is apparently trying to get movie studios and ISPs onboard, so right now it is not known when this new strategy will come in effect.
