Apple Acquires Matcha.tv To Possibly Improve Apple TV

Apple has made quite the interesting acquisition today as a company spokesperson confirmed with AllThingsD they have acquired Matcha for an undisclosed price, although VentureBeat values the acquisition somewhere between $1 million and $1.5 million.

Matcha.tv was shuttered back in May, leaving many of its users to wonder why exactly they had dropped off the face of the Internet. Now that news of the acquisition has been made public, users of the service can finally rest easy to know they have been acquired by Apple.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the service, Matcha is an aggregator for streaming video from a number of popular services that include content from popular video-streaming websites, cable TV and digital video stores. The service supported Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, Amazon Prime as well as cable networks such as Comcast.

So – what does this mean for Apple users? At this point, Apple has kept silent in regards to what exactly they plan to do with their newly-acquired company, but it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to assume the acquisition will play a role in the company’s future with its Apple TV or maybe even be used for an entirely new product all together.
