Last week Google announced Android Device Manager (read how to use it to find your Android phone), a new service for Android users that helps them track down their missing or lost smartphone. Google certainly took its time, considering that Apple’s Find My iPhone service has been around for quite some time, which essentially offers the same functionality.
Other Android manufacturers offer similar service restricted to their own devices, take Sony for example, which recently announced its myXperia security service. Following the announcement last week, it appears that Android Device Manage release is currently underway.
Android Device Manager is actually a website which locates a lost smartphone on a map. Users also have the option to send a command to their smartphone to make it ring, the service doesn’t support sending a message to the device just yet, perhaps Google will add this feature in the future.
The crux here is definitely security and if there are no chances of a device being found, users will find solace in the fact that they will be able to remotely wipe all data through Android Device Manager. The service works with any Android device that’s running version 2.2 or higher.
