Activision’s Skylanders Reportedly Outselling All Other Action Figures
When I was growing up and before video games were so popular, I was given action figures to play with, but these days with kids having access to smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles, are action figures still relevant? That’s what Activision tried to do by combining action figures with a video game that resulted in the Skylanders title. For those unfamiliar, Skylanders is a video game that uses figurines to interact with it through the use of NFC. It was a novel idea but it appears that kids love novel.
According to a new press release from Activision, the company is claiming that the Skylander toys have actually managed to outsell all other action figures in the US in 2013, and these numbers are based on internal Activision numbers along with the US NPD Group’s numbers. The Skylanders franchise has managed to produce $1.5 billion in revenue around the world, and while it might not be the best-selling video game title, Activision claims that the latest Skylanders Giants title is the best-selling console and handheld title in overall dollars spent in 2013. Not too shabby!
