Super Smash Bros. Was Considered For Other Nintendo Handhelds At One Point

While the new Super Smash Bros. will be arriving onto Nintendo’s consoles such as the Wii U and the 3DS, wouldn’t it have been cool if the game had made its way onto other Nintendo consoles? After all given how fun the game is, we’re sure many non-Wii U and 3DS owners would have loved to take the game with them on the go, and you might be pleased to learn that while Nintendo is not bringing the game onto other handheld consoles, they did consider it, at least for a brief moment. This was confirmed by the game’s lead, Masahiro Sakurai himself during an interview with gamesTM magazine.

According to Sakurai, “It’s not that I haven’t wanted to – I thought about it, I did. To be honest, we purely didn’t have the opportunity, it just never came up […] And also, to speak freely, if you look at a handheld device preceding anything before the GBA, I don’t know that it would have the capabilities to fully realize Smash Bros.” Admittedly the GBA probably could not have handled Super Smash Bros. properly, but it’s still nice to know that it was at the very least taken into consideration.
