Obsidian Had A Sci-Fi Skyrim Prototype At Some Point
As much as you love the game you’re playing, chances are its earlier iterations and initial plans were probably far from what the final product became, and if you loved the Skyrim RPG adventure game, you might be interested to learn at some point in time, its developers Obsidian had once imagined a more sci-fi version of the game which was given the name, Backspace. Yup the folks at Obsidian had once thought up a sci-fi version of Skyrim that would be based on the game’s engine and use the game’s “Radiant AI” system. Safe to say the project never saw the light of day, although apparently a small team was working on a prototype back in 2011 but never made it very far.
The good news is that if you would love to see a sci-fi version of Skyrim, the game has not been completely shelved. When the folks at Kotaku reached out to Obsidian boss, Feargus Urquhart, it was revealed that the project has not been cancelled and Obsidian could be revisited in the future. “Backspace was a project concept that we neither cancelled nor greenlit […] We had some great people work on the idea for Backspace for a bit of time and then moved them off to other projects as opportunities came up. We’ve been around for ten years now and have had a bunch of great ideas that we still have sitting around that we may be able to return to in the future.”
