Rumor has it that iPhone 5S is going to be the biggest “S” moniker touting update in Apple’s history. Among various other things, it is expected the smartphone will come with a fingerprint sensor. In fact, this component is believed to be a major reason for the set backs in iPhone 5S mass production. Up till now it has been believed that the sensor will be under the Home button. Though a recently granted Apple patent hints otherwise, there exists the possibility that the iPhone 5S fingerprint sensor might be embedded in its display instead.
The technology that’s described in this patent comes from AuthenTec, a mobile security firm that Apple acquired back in 2012. The sensor can be used as a secondary input and can also be used with other circuitry to provide selection function, tactile feedback or even power up a device. The possibilities here are endless, and the idea itself isn’t too futuristic or far-fetched. This patent was filed back in January earlier this year. Apple iPhone 5S is expected to be unveiled this September, mass production will reportedly begin in the end of July.
