GM And Honda Working On Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Vehicles By 2020
Two giants in the motoring world, General Motors Co and Honda Motor Co., will pit their resources together in order to develop hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle systems over the course of the coming seven years. This is the latest alliance in the motor vehicle industry to reduce the cost of the new technology without compromising on meeting ever tightening global emissions rules. Honda and GM too, will be working on a refueling infrastructure which will be part of the long term strategy and plan so that consumers will be able to see the long-term viability of fuel-cell vehicles. We do know that Toyota themselves are looking at a 300 mile range hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, although that is happening sooner rather than later.
It remains to be seen whether automakers are able to meet the stricter emissions rules, and it is said by the time 2025 rolls around, cars in the US will need to achieve a corporate average fuel economy of 54.5 miles per gallon, which translates to 36 mpg or higher in actual driving. Electric vehicles are not the answer at the moment, and hydrogen fuel cell rides do seem to be the best bet.
