EA To Drop Focus On Social/Facebook Games, Will Focus On Console And Mobile
Social games such as Farmville used to be pretty popular and some of them still are, but it looks like at least one publisher has decided to no longer pursue that avenue, at least for the time being. EA has confirmed that they will be shifting away from social and Facebook games, and apparently it seems that the recent round of staff cuts was due to that. According to EA’s president, Frank Gibeau, EA will remain active on Facebook and continue to participate there, but for now their focus over the next couple of years will be on consoles and mobile.
This is not a surprising move, especially given that next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony are due to be released later this year, and not to mention that games such as Candy Crush have proved that mobile games definitely have the potential to earn a lot of money. Last we heard Candy Crush was raking in an estimated $633,000 a day, so why wouldn’t a big name publisher such as EA want a piece of that action, right? In any case if you have grown to love EA’s social and Facebook efforts, it looks like you won’t be expecting any new titles in the near future.
