The Guardian reports that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has issued a secret order to Verizon compelling it to hand over call data of millions of its subscribers to the National Security Agency. The top secret order was reportedly issued in April, it requires that Verizon provide the NSA with data on all calls in its systems at an ongoing, daily basis. The order is said to have been granted on 25th April and is to end on 19th July.
The order compels Verizon to hand over the numbers of both parties on a call, as well as information about call duration, location, time and duration of all calls and unique identifiers. The content of the conversation is not covered by this order. The Department of Justice, White House and National Security Agency have all reportedly denied the Guardian’s request for a comment, and so has Verizon. The order also restricts Verizon from revealing that it receives FBI requests for customer’s data, or that such an order has been issued. Calls made within the U.S. and between the U.S. and other countries are covered by FISA’s order. We’d love to know your thoughts on this matter.
