Apple had already confirmed that it would be unveiling a new version of OS X at WWDC 2013, indeed it has. The company has moved away from the tradition of naming these releases after cats, such as Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard etc. Calling it their first California-themed released, Apple just now unveiled OS X Mavericks.
While OS X Mavericks comes with great new apps and enhancements, Apple talked about three of them at the conference. These include Finder Tabs, which basically allow users to work in Finder with multiple windows, all windows can be drawn together in tabs. Tagging has been added to OS X Mavericks as well, tags for documents wherever they might be on the computer, which would obviously make searching them a lot easier.
As previously rumored, OS X Mavericks comes with support for multiple displays. Menubar and dock will be available across both displays, making Mac an even more powerful way to get work done. Those who have an HDTV connected with Apple TV will be able to use it as a fully connected secondary display as well. Some improvements have been made to Safari as well. There’s super smooth scrolling, a bookmarks bar in the sidebar which also contains Reading Lists, LinkedIn and Twitter.
Among the various improvements mentioned for OS X Mavericks, iCloud Keychain is one of them. It basically stores all of your passwords in the cloud, Safari will get the ability to auto-suggest passwords. iCloud Keychain is also capable of remembering passwords, though users will have to remember their own security codes. The notification experience has been improved as well, with the ability to reply straight to email, FaceTime and messages notifications. iOS push notification alerts from apps will be displayed on Mac as well, notifications will also be displayed on the lockscreen. There’s also the feature of automatic app upgrades in the background.
There’s a new calendar and Maps for OS X, users will be able to push directions from OS X Maps to their iPhones. iBooks for Mac has also been unveiled, the full iBooks library on your iOS device will be available on your Mac as well. The developer preview of OS X Mavericks is out today, the final public release will take place this Fall.
