It always starts with a whisper, as reports of a potential recall started to circulate around, citing that Nintendo’s 8GB Wii U Basic would be the particular make that will be affected by this particular recall. Well, GameStop did step forward to share that their sources point towards the recall of this Wii U Basic unit being confirmed, since they would no longer be selling the console from the middle of this month onwards. No only that, the folks over at CNET, too, has just confirmed with GameStop that this will definitely happen, as sure as the sun rises from the east and sets in the west.
Having said that, if you are still bent on picking up a Wii U Basic, you had better not tarry, since from June 18th onwards, all GameStop locations are are tipped to start returning any of their unsold Wii U Basic inventory. So far Nintendo has yet to step forward to issue an official statement on the matter, but we would like to think that this is also being drawn up so that the right words will be used to soothe any ruffled feathers.
Update: Nintendo of America director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta, said, “There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware. To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available.”
I guess it is more of a balancing act here, and we could very well see stocks of the 8GB Wii U Basic eventually balance itself out given enough time. Sort of like the Light Side and Dark Sides of the Force achieving a zero sum moment, no?
