Modified Chargers Can Be Used To Hack iOS Devices

Buying official accessories is usually an expensive affair, although this usually comes with peace of mind knowing you bought a product that will work, or if it doesn’t will allow you to return it. So in the future if you were thinking of purchasing something like an unofficial iOS charger, you might want to think twice because it has been found that your iOS device could technically be hacked through the use of a modified charger.

According to security researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, they have discovered a way of pushing software onto an iOS device through the use of a modified charger. The researchers claim that all users are at risk, but considering that the modified charger is pretty big, we guess it will be pretty obvious, although the worrying part is that we guess eventually hackers will find a way to shrink it down into the same size and shape as Apple’s chargers, so people buying unofficial chargers could be at risk.

The researchers explained, “Despite the plethora of defense mechanisms in iOS, we successfully injected arbitrary software into current-generation Apple devices running the latest operating system (OS) software… All users are affected, as our approach requires neither a jailbroken device nor user interaction.”
