Mirror’s Edge 2 Was Built For Next-Generation Consoles

This year’s E3 was one of the most important for the gaming industry considering just how crucial the next generation of consoles is going be for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. EA Games announced a number of next-generation titles, one of which was Mirror’s Edge 2. Fans of the original game have been wondering why it’s taken the company so long to release a sequel, and it looks like the reason might have been due to the hardware limitations of current-generation game consoles.

Speaking with CVG, EA Games’ executive vice president Patrick Söderlund explained why it took five years for a Mirror’s Edge sequel to surface, which turns out the sequel’s vision was just too big and had to be delayed until the next generation of consoles was made available.

“We’ve been looking at Mirror’s Edge for many years and had small prototype teams and incubations around what it could be. But it wasn’t until Sara Jansson, who is now the producer on it, came to me and called Karl-Magnus Troedsson and said, ‘listen, I have an idea for what this could be’. She presented a vision so inspiring that we were like, ‘we have to build this now’.

The interesting part is that it was a game that could only be built in gen 4 and that was cool. I liked that because what they’re doing, it’s not possible on the current generation”

Mirror’s Edge was a fantastic game that revolutionized what we consider a first-person game to be. Hearing its sequel was just too big to be fit into current generation game consoles makes us want this game to be out immediately as we can only imagine what EA has thought of to take the franchise to the next level.
