What is it with companies who decide to get the help of celebrities to sell their gadgets? I suppose being associated with the hip and happening folks do have a certain degree of influence over the more impressionable minds out there, but does it bring in the kind of revenue that will offset the royalty fees paid off to the said celebrity in the first place? I guess it does, otherwise it might not have been employed by various companies over the ages if the result turns out otherwise. Samsung reportedly entered into a partnership with hip hop mogul Jay-Z, while here we are with beleaguered smartphone company HTC entering talks with Robert Downey Jr. in a $12 million contract that will run for two years.
With Robert Downey Jr. having had a string of recent hits on the silver screen, including the Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man franchises, will his star power actually help put HTC into the black? That remains to be seen, and hopefully the folks over at HTC will not have any kind of delusion into thinking that a certain Tony Stark could bail their company out, or even inject more funds in the long run.
