Yesterday marked the 63rd anniversary of the start of the Korean War, and South Korea experienced a fresh string of cyberattacks. The official websites of the presidential office, national airline and some local newspapers were targeted, among others. According to Reuters, the hackers were able to access personal details of thousands of U.S. troops posted in Korea, and that information has reportedly been leaked on multiple sites online.
Apart from the troops, the hackers were also able to secure personal details of over two million workers of South Korea’s ruling party, their information was reportedly posted online as well. The hackers were able to take down official websites of the presidential Blue House and Prime Minister’s office for more than six hours. Of the 40,000 U.S. troops, it is reported that some 28,500 troops’ details such as ranks and birth dates have been leaked. While South Korea has blamed North Korea of hatching cyberattacks against it in the past, no fingers were pointed this time around. As far as the leaked data goes, its legitimacy has not been verified, according to an anonymous South Korean cybersecurity official.
