Facebook RSS Reader Rumors Make Their Mark

Sometime in the middle of March this year, I am quite sure that a fair number of you suffered from a pretty shocking bit of news – not that another celebrity bites the dust because of decades of abuse and depression, but rather, that Google’s beloved Google Reader will virtually breathe its last when July 1st rolls around. Well, RSS fans would be on the lookout for a decent replacement, and several names have been bandied about so far, but Facebook is the latest one to hit the news vines.

Tom Waddington, a web developer for the site Cut Out + Keep, claims that there is a new code he discovered on Facebook which could potentially point to the possibility of Facebook rolling out RSS feeds for users down the future. Apparently, the Facebook code for RSS feeds do point to multiple entries and a list of subscribers, and Waddington added, “What’s surprising is that the code mentions RSS specifically and distinctly from existing interest lists and friend lists. I’ve tried to access RSS feeds through the API, but it’s currently locked down and only available to whitelisted apps.” Do you think Facebook’s attempt at a RSS reader, if true, would succeed?
