EA’s Origin has been nothing more than a portal similar to the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and Steam that allows its users to connect with other EA Games fans as well as purchase digital versions of PC games. EA’s vice president Andrew Wilson wants the platform to grow into something else, though, and he explained exactly what he wants Origin to become during a chat he had with GamesIndurstry International during E3.
EA’s Origin was originally designed to be “a service that makes your EA games better,” but since its early beginnings, the service has become less about adding functionality to games and more about selling them within a branded store. Wilson wants to go back to how Origin was originally conceived as he believes it should be seen as “a complementary service that enhances your game experience irrespective of where you made the transaction. That’s the shift you’re going to see from us.”
