AT&T Rolls Out Update To iPhone Users To Enable Emergency Alerts

iPhone users on AT&T have gone without being alerted to local emergencies for years, resulting in them not knowing when something like a meteor, alien invasion or Godzilla attack is happening right in their area. Fortunately, AT&T is announcing its now rolling out a software update for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and some iPhone 4 handsets, which will enable Wireless Emergency Alerts.

With this software update, select iPhone users will now be able to receive government-issued safety messages which include AMBER Alerts, Presidential alerts and emergency alerts. When the software update is rolled out to your supported iPhone, a message saying “Carrier Settings Update: new settings required for your device have been installed,” will be displayed.

Those who would prefer to not receive alerts have the option of switching off AMBER and Emergency Alerts, although Presidential alerts can’t be disabled. The carrier update will be made available as an OTA update for iPhone users running iOS 6.1 or later. Those using older versions of iOS will be able to update their device the next time they connect to iTunes.
