Last month we were treated to a number of Windows 8.1 build leaks, one particular leak contained references to Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2. Today Microsoft officially confirmed that Windows 8’s much rumored update, Windows 8.1, will be releasing later this year. Windows 8.1 is more commonly known as Windows Blue, it’s a name that stuck. The company has also confirmed that Windows Blue public preview release will take place towards the end of June.
The Windows Blue public preview will be available to anyone who has Windows 8, through the Windows Store. The announcement was made by head of Windows Engineering, Julie Larson-Green at a conference in New York earlier today. The time frame that Julie has given fits in comfortable with that of Microsoft’s Build 2013 conference, which is being held in the last week of June. As far as the public preview for Windows Blue RT is concerned, Microsoft has said that they don’t have any comments with regards to the public preview of the company’s trimmed down update for tablets. It is rumored though that Windows Blue RT will release later this year as well.
