Essentially the Fairphone is an Android device that its makers have envisioned will be made from materials that are mined in areas that do not abuse human right, and will be assembled by suppliers who have a decent track record for good employment conditions. The people behind Fairphone have also teamed up with LaborVoices which is an organization that helps people find work with ethical suppliers, and help companies set up deals with these suppliers in return.
As for the phone itself, the exact specifications remain unknown but what we do know is that it is expected to run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and sport a 4.3” display with a replaceable battery. Priced at €325, one of the caveats is that at least 5,000 people need to pay for it before the phone gets made, any less and the plans will be scrapped.
