Jolla Announces Their First Sailfish OS Smartphone

2013-05-20_0304 When it comes to smartphones, there are a variety of different platforms that one can choose from – iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry and so on, so the question is with iOS and Android dominating the way that they do, how will a new entrant into the mobile operating system market perform? Well we guess we will have to wait and find out, but to first movers and early adopters out there, Jolla has announced their first smartphone which is also called the Jolla.

The handset will be powered by the Sailfish operating system and since we have yet to try it out for ourselves, we can’t really speak as to how well it holds up against the competition, although Jolla has marketed the operating system as “a mobile-optimized OS that has the flexibility of a unique, open platform,” and how it will be compliant with Android apps, which we hope to mean that users will be able to access a wide variety of apps right out the door.

As far as the rest of the specs are concerned, the Jolla will sport a 4.5” display, although its resolution is unknown at this point, with a dual-core chipset, 16GB of onboard storage that can be expanded via microSD, along with an 8MP camera and 4G connectivity. The phone can be pre-ordered via Jolla’s website for 399 Euros and the first shipments are expected to begin in Q4 of 2013.
