Acer didn’t just show two Windows 8 machines today, the Aspire R7 and the Aspire P3, but they also took a moment to give its new Android tablet, the Iconia A1, its own moment in the sun. The Acer Iconia A1 features a 7.9-inch display with IPS technology, which means its viewing angles will be very good, a quad-core processor and fits perfectly in one hand, even a hand as small as mine. This is the first time Acer has delivered a 7-inch tablet, which means this device would be in direct competition with the iPad Mini, Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD.
The majority of the Iconia A1 is covered in plastic, that majority being its rear panel and the device’s surrounding rim. The back of the Iconia A1 is white, while the surrounding rim has a silver lining. The front panel is completely made of glass and there’s a black bezel surrounding its 7.9-inch display, which is capable of a 1024 x 768 resolution. Even though the Iconia A1 only has 1GB of RAM and a quad-core 1.2GHz MediaTek processor, it felt very responsive and smooth during our short time with it, although that might have something to do with its Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The last of its specs feature a microUSB and microHDMI ports and a microSD card slot.
Acer will be making two versions of the Iconia A1 available: an 8GB and 16GB version, which will retail for $169 and $199, respectively. At this point, there’s no specific release date for the Android tablet, but an Acer representative says the Iconia A1 is expected to be released sometime in June.
