T-Mobile now finally gets the iPhone, it launches the flagship Apple smartphone on April 12th. Previously users who had unlocked their carrier locked iPhones, or those who simply had a factory unlocked one, were able to connect to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. T-Mobile has officially rolled out its 4G LTE network and it would be a shame if unlocked iPhone users were not able to connect to it. There’s word going around that T-Mobile will be releasing an iOS firmware update for unlocked iPhone subscribers on April 5th. This update will allow access to AWS spectrum bands, which is geek talk for unadulterated access to the carrier’s LTE network.
There’s a caveat though. The LTE network is only available in seven major cities as of now, so unless you’re not based in one of those locations, you’ll still be connecting to their HSPA+ network regardless of the new update. The update will reportedly also give users access to T-Mobile’s Visual Voicemail as well as a host of other features. The update will be rolled out over-the-air to all iPhones on their network that are running iOS 6.1.x or higher firmware.
