Digital Public Library Of America Beta Web Portal Launched

Digital Public Library of America has launched its beta web portal through which digital collection of public libraries and museums from all over the U.S. can be accessed. The launch event of this portal was to be held at Boston Public Library later this week, but they’ve cancelled the launch event because of the Marathon bombings. The portal is in beta mode right now but it does offer users access to apps that have been created using DPLA’s API, and various tools that can be used to search for items visually.

A number of high profile institutions are on board as partners, these include Harvard University, New York Public Library and the Smithsonian Museum. Several special exhibitions created with the Minnesota Digital Library, South Carolina Digital Library, Digital Commonwealth and more have also been added at launch. Executive Director Dan Cohen said that they are “delighted to be able to share this unified, open collection with American and the world.” He says that the can’t wait to see what people discover using this portal. The portal can be accessed from here.
