The Windows Store has finally crossed the 50,000 mark. It is now home to over 50,000 applications for Windows 8 and Windows RT. Despite that it is being reported that the number of apps being submitted to Windows Store is declining each month. Reportedly app submissions have slowed down substantially ever since Windows 8 was launched back in November 2012. To put things in perspective, the Mac App Store has some 14,000 applications, though bear in mind that Windows Store also caters to tablets. Apple’s iPad tablet has over 374,000 apps available for it.
Microsoft has rallied developers to create apps for its platform. Its efforts must be commended, but there’s a big question, where to from here? Nevermind the fact that there are over 50,000 apps, most of them are iOS ports. Apps developed primarily for this platform are far less in number. This is where quantity trumps quality. Microsoft still has a lot of work to do along with the developers, to ensure that Windows Store offers apps of quality. Great apps are vital for a platform in these times. Nonetheless, congratulations to Microsoft on Windows Store passing the 50,000 apps mark.
