Ever since Instagram had a falling out with its users 3 months ago, Flickr has been trying its absolute best to acquire those users, first by updating its iOS application to give it a more Instagram-like feel, then by giving away 3 months of premium service. The service is quite comparable to Instagram, although searching for a specific topic can be rather difficult. Today, Flickr will be making it easier to search through its users’ library to images now that its iOS application has hashtag support.
Hashtag support on Flickr is pretty much identical to other social networks where such tags are used: throw in a hashtag in your image’s description and people can search for that image and others like it simply by throwing in the relevant hashtag. Flickr is joining in on the hashtag fun as well by allowing its users to participate in a weekly photo challenge called #FlickrFriday.
For you Flickr web users, hashtags won’t be supported on Flickr’s website. The hashtag support seems to only be available for its mobile applications, starting with iOS today. If you need to search for a certain photo, Flickr’s tags system should be more than enough for you.
