Considering how much easier it is nowadays to purchase and download a digital copy of games on the PlayStation 3 as Sony often has new games available for purchase on the day they’re released, the company still believes physical media is the best way to go with its titles, especially with next-gen video games.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s European CEO and president Jim Ryan reportedly said Blu-ray discs will still be considered the PlayStation 4’s bread and butter, even though Sony has made a conscious effort to deliver their most Internet-heavy video game console to date.
“Clearly, and this applies not just to games but to pretty much every form of entertainment, there is a trend to increased digital consumption, and that is happening now on PS3 and will continue and will probably accelerate on PS4,” Ryan told IGN. “But the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-Ray discs, for the foreseeable future.”
The reason why Ryan believes physical media will still be the ideal method of delivering games is due to the size of titles for the PlayStation 4. “For our big first-party games, we’ve encouraged the studios to make as much use of the BD50 as they possibly can – some of these things run to like 45 gigs.”
Even though download speeds from our ISP has steadily increased over the years, a 45GB game could take around 10 hours on a 10Mbps connection. We don’t know about you, but if we buy a game, the last thing we’d want to do is wait 10 hours for it to complete its download to play.
