How many of us have imagined how cool it would be if one day we could interact with our computers like Tom Cruise did in Minority Report? While it might take awhile before such gestures become widely adopted, Thalmic Labs have created a device called the MYO Armband which allows the user to interact with their Mac or PC or other devices via gestures. Interesting unlike motion tracking technology currently available, such as Sony’s PlayStation Move, the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Kinect, the MYO Armband does not require a camera to be present in order to detect the gestures. Instead it relies on movement as well as muscle activity, with its creators claiming that the armband will be able to detect changes in gestures right down to each individual finger! By that logic it would seem that the MYO Armband is pretty damn precise. The demonstration video above shows the armband in action, where users scroll through websites via their fingers, playing music by snapping fingers, or even playing an FPS by mimicking a gun with their hand. In fact it even shows how you could control a remote controlled device by using your arm.
Now the good news is that this isn’t some concept product – it’s real and you can actually pre-order it. It costs $149 and you can pre-order it via MYO’s website. It is said that it will be available in limited quantities and should be launched late 2013. If you’d like to see the MYO Armband in action, check it out in the video above. So, any takers?
