Apple’s Retina Display Will Increase Price Of iPad Mini

Apple is rumored to add a Retina display to its second generation iPad Mini. However, the addition is most likely to raise the production cost of each unit by almost $12. This addition comes with just upgrading the display to a Retina display and keeping the rest of the components of the iPad Mini same.

The current resolution of the iPad Mini is  1,024 by 768, and if the Retina display is added, the resolution will increase to 2,048 by 1,536. The current cost of a startup iPad Mini is around $188 per unit, which if the Retina display is added, will become roughly $200 per unit.  The existing devices, which sport a 7.9-inch display, are compatible with applications created for first and second generation iPads. However the new iPad Mini should have a 7.9-inch Retina panel.

The current sale price of an entry level 16GB iPad Mini is $329, which might be revised to compensate for the change in production cost. However, with both Samsung and Acer poised to launch their own versions of 8-inch tablets, Apple faces stiff competition and the company might have to stick to a competitive rate. The launch date of the Apple iPad Mini is still unknown and is open to rumors of all sorts.
