China Had 51 Million New Internet Users Last Year
China is home to more than 1.2 billion people, roughly 19 percent of the world’s overall population. But it looks like the “sleeping dragon” is on the verge of dominating the online world as well. According to a data released by the China Internet Network Information Center, around 51 million new Internet users were added to its stats last year, bringing the overall number of Internet users to 564 million, a 10 percent growth, so to speak.
It is interesting to point out that the growth happened in a time where authorities have tightened the control over the Internet. The increase is largely due to the growing number of mobile users surfing the web. The China Internet Network Information Center is also saying that the number of “web surfers” using smartphones and tablets rose to 18.1 percent in 2012, around 420 million to be more specific.
