President Obama Is TIME’s Person Of The Year, Tim Cook Is Second Runner-Up

 

Before the world, err 2012, ends, TIME magazine is announcing its Person of the Year together with a few notable runner-ups. TIME’s Person of the Year, formerly known as Man of the Year, is an annual issue that features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that “has done the most to influence the events of the year.” This year, the Person of the Year award goes to U.S. President Barack Obama. Explaining the magazine’s decision for choosing the President, Michael Scherer writes, “Through crises and gridlock, President Barack Obama kept the trust of the American people – and won a chance to rekindle the hope that inspired a nation.” 

Interestingly, Apple CEO Tim Cook is crowned as the second runner-up to the 2012 Person of the Year spot, following Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai. “Acting Apple CEO for two years, Tim Cook has presided over one of the most prosperous periods in the company’s history,” writes Scherer. Other honorable runner-ups include Mohamed Morsi, the President of Egypt, and Fabiola Gianotti, the famed Italian particle physicist who oversaw one of the world’s biggest scientific experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
