This foam has been proven in laboratories and tests to stop bleeding for up to an hour when placed within the abdominal cavities of pigs, and the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) hopes that future development on such technology might eventually lead to preventing the death of U.S. soldiers due to internal bleeding. In fact, internal bleeding has long been considered to be the leading cause of potentially survivable deaths on the battlefield, as it is crucial to ensure the injured arrive at a hospital for surgery as soon as possible. It will take some time before this special foam is a standard issue item for combat medics.
