Amazon’s smartphone rumored to be manufactured by Foxconn, could see a launch in Q2 or Q3 2013
It has been rumored for a while now that Amazon could be cooking up a smartphone of its own. After all with the success the company has had with its range of affordable Kindle Fire Android tablets, perhaps their Amazon-branded smartphones could just do as well, right? According to the Taiwan Economic News, they have reported that Amazon has chosen Foxconn to manufacture their handset – unsurprising considering that many big name companies like Apple has chosen Foxconn to do their manufacturing as well. The report goes on to suggest that Amazon has placed an order for about 5 million units and could be launching the device in Q2 or Q3 of 2013 at around the $100 or $200 mark, which we can’t help but think might be too cheap to be true.
However it would not surprise us if it were to be launched at such a low price – the original Kindle Fire was said to be causing Amazon a loss per unit sold, but given that Amazon has their own content, such as ebook offerings and the Amazon Appstore of their own, presumably these losses are recouped through the purchase of said content. In any case Q2 and Q3 2013 is still pretty far off, so we’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of an Amazon smartphone? After perhaps taking the Kindle Fire/Kindle Fire HD for a spin, would you be inclined to purchase a smartphone from Amazon?
