Sony to ship 50 million smartphones next year, says report
DigiTimes is reporting that Sony is aiming to ship 50 million smartphones next year and that 30 to 40 percent of the number will most likely be outsourced to original device manufacturers in Taiwan. Industry sources told the publication that among the ODMs included are Foxconn, Arima Communications, and Compal Communications. Additionally, Sony is also expecting to ship 35 million smartphones this year – reportedly a 50 percent increase from last year. However, the sources added that Sony will still find it hard to “swing back to profitability.”
Earlier this month, we reported that Sony has launched a cost cutting campaign to reduce its losses by nearly 50 percent. Foxconn, being the largest ODM for Sony, already began shipping Sony Xperia models in Q3 this year, although the exact phone models weren’t revealed. Arima Communications, on the other hand, will start shipping Sony’s smartphones early next year. Sources added that Compal Communications will follow in the second quarter next year. Sony could order an estimated number of 20 million smartphones from the aforementioned ODMs.
