Canon 5D Mark III 2013 update paves the way for high-end HDMI video

It was a fair number of years ago that digital cameras were able to record video as well, and this particular feature first appeared on consumer class digital cameras before making their way towards the high end DSLRs. Of course, over the course of time, it made perfect sense for video recording quality to improve, and with the latest upcoming firmware update that is coming next year for the Canon 5D Mark III, videographers will be able to rely on said DSLR to record uncompressed HDMI video, now how about that?

Professionals who have been hankering after better quality images and videos will definitely find the April 2013 (that is when it is scheduled, anyway) update to be one worth looking forward to. Canon shared about this update, “When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.”

This firmware update would also mean the Canon 5D Mark III will be competitive with Nikon’s D4 and D800 SLRs, as all three will be able to output uncompressed 4:2:2 video via HDMI.
