House of Representatives considering a bill that will discourage patent trolls
Reading tech news, some of you guys probably have come across lawsuits between companies and while some are legit, some of these companies are what many consider to be patent trolls and are simply suing because they can over some vague patent that they have bought. However it seems that the House of Representatives is now considering a bill that could help reduce the amount of patent troll-like cases making their way into the courts and into the headlines. According to the folks at Ars Technica, the act dubbed Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes would basically try to discourage companies who might not have a very strong claim by making them pay the legal costs of the defendants should their lawsuit prove unsuccessful. The act, if passed successfully, would cover both computer and software patents, with the latter being defined as, “any process that could be implemented in a computer regardless of whether a computer is specifically mentioned in the patent”. We don’t expect to see this bill passed any time soon, but hopefully it will and we will start seeing less patent troll lawsuits in the future.
