Demonoid domains up for sale

There was quite a bit of news bytes floating around recently concerning popular BitTorrent site Demonoid which was recently shut down, as the authorities cited that to be a gift to the US. Well, it seems that more developments have happened since then, where a trio of Demonoid domains have gone up for sale, just a couple of weeks after it was taken down in a coordinated, concerted effort. The site is based in Ukraine, and a trio of its domains – demonoid.me, demonoid.com, and demonoid.ph, can now be purchased on domain marketplace Sedo.

According to Jeremy Banks, director of anti-piracy for the IFPI, “Demonoid was a leading global player in digital music piracy which acted as unfair competition to the more than 500 licensed digital music services that offer great value music to consumers while respecting the rights of artists, songwriters and record companies. The operation to close Demonoid was a great example of international cooperation to tackle a service that was facilitating the illegal distribution of music on a vast scale.”

It remains to be seen whether international hacking group Anonymous will make good on their promise to rain down a torrent of pain on the Ukrainian government for being part of Demonoid’s closure, while touting that they will use “any means necessary” to restore Demonoid.
