Android now accounts to 68 percent of global smartphone shipments in Q2 this year
Contrary to our previous report from technology research firm Strategy Analytics that revealed Android’s U.S. market share dropping to 56 percent in Q2 this year from last year’s 60 percent during the second quarter, industry analyst Canalys is saying that Android is doing quite pretty well in China, with roughly 80 percent of smartphones shipped in the second quarter of this year in the nation running the platform. On a global scale, Android continues to grow, surpassing 100 million quarterly smartphone shipments for the first time and reaching two-thirds share of the market, Canalys says.
Android’s growth rate in Q2 this year, based on the research, has already reached 68 percent with roughly 107.8 million shipments. Overall, the growth rate of Android from Q2 last year to this year’s second quarter is now at 110.4 percent. Meanwhile, iOS garnered a growth rate of 28 percent with over 26 million shipments in Q2 this year. In China, Samsung continues to be the leading force in the smartphone market with a 17 percent market share. Trailing behind Samsung are ZTE, Lenovo, Huawei, and Apple. But this may not be surprising considering that Android has a lot of devices up its sleeve.
