U.S. Judge rejects redaction requests filed by Apple and Samsung

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has rejected requests made by tech giants Apple and Samsung to keep some of the documents confidential and out of public view as they push through with the patent wars. Earlier today, Judge Koh issued the order saying, “It appears that the parties have overdesignated confidential documents and are seeking to seal information that is not truly sealable.”

Although it is reasonable to file sensitive documents under seal during intellectual-property cases due to the high stakes involved, Reuters filed a motion to oppose the redactions of some documents. This eventually prompted Judge Koh to rule that only documents of “exceptionally sensitive information that truly deserve protection” will be allowed to be redacted or kept from the public. Judge Koh has already granted pretrial injunctions against Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1. The two dueling giants are given one week to refile their sealing requests.
