HTC closes office in South Korea
What do you do when your phones don’t sell as well as the Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note in South Korea? You shut down your office there of course – at least that’s what HTC has done. According to reports online, HTC closed its office in South Korea after not doing very well in the country. Last year, HTC had 2% share of the smartphone market, and in the first quarter of 2012 – it was reduced to a miniscule 1%. With the company shutting down today, we can only assume that it dropped even lower in Q2 this year.
This shutdown follows another one in Brazil last month where it had less than 1% of the smartphone market as well. Considering how 90% of the smartphone market in South Korea is dominated by Samsung, LG and Pantech – I guess it would be a better decision for HTC to focus its resources in places where it can succeed. Things haven’t been looking too good for the company since the launch of the HTC One series that was said to stabilize the company’s sales. Hopefully the rest of 2012 will be better for the company.
