American screenwriter and film director John August, who wrote for several of Tim Burton’s films as well as the popular Charlie’s Angels flick, has some words to say about the hot Diable 3 video game. The Hollywood screenwriter, who just finished playing the game, said that the storytelling in Diablo 3 is pretty damn weak. August also tweeted a few days ago after finishing the game saying, “Finished Diablo 3. Writing credits are pretty deep in the end crawl, consistent with how little they cared.”
August believes that the writers of the game weren’t given very good placement in the hierarchy of credits. “Shouldn’t my character be in charge?” he asked. “Note that I’m not actually demanding choice or free will as a player. Look, I’ve played Diablo. I’ll go kill the next thing. But I’d love to feel like my character was making the choice, rather than being a lackey.”
The screenwriter also added that some interludes in the game might have been added very late because the the player/plot relationship was non-existent. But to be fair, he said in the end that he liked a few parts of the story as well as some characters, particularly Kormac the Templar. “Like its predecessor, it ultimately becomes a game of optimization, and that’s just not my thing,” August concluded. What about you, do you agree with the screenwriter’s comment?
