Virgin Mobile reportedly preparing to launch prepaid iPhone of their own

If you’re looking to get your hands on an iPhone but you’d rather not be tied down to a contract, it seems that Cricket will not be the only carrier in the US to offer up a prepaid iPhone. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, it seems that Sprint’s Virgin Mobile has plans to launch a prepaid iPhone of their own. Assuming their intel is correct, the carrier will be making the official announcement sometime this week and could see a launch on the 1st of July.

This would make Virgin Mobile the second carrier in the US to offer up a prepaid iPhone, with the first being Cricket. No word on pricing just yet, but with Cricket offering it up at $499.99 for the 16GB iPhone 4S and $399.99 for the 8GB iPhone 4 at $55 a month for unlimited calling and texting, we don’t expect Virgin Mobile’s to stray very far in terms of their own pricing. According to the WSJ, this would help with Sprint’s deal with Apple which had them committed to purchasing $15.5 billion worth of iPhones from Apple over the next four years.
