Hackers extorted AmeriCash Advance, leaks data after lender refuses

Online loan provider AmeriCash Advance recently became a victim of hacking and extortion. A group of hackers named “RexMundi” reportedly stole data from the firm and demanded $15,000 in exchange for the hacked files. The hackers eventually released the stolen data after AmeriCash Advance refused to pay the extortion fee. “We immediately notified the appropriate authorities and promptly took steps to ensure that no other data could be accessed. We will not cave in to blackmail, and are cooperating fully with the authorities to protect our customers and bring these criminals to justice,” the firm said.

Based on the investigation, the section of the system that was hacked was the automatic email responder section, the part of the system that sends an auto-reply to an applicant that their application has been received. The data exposed allegedly included names, email addresses, last four digits of Social Security numbers, and the name of the customer’s financial institution. “”We have notified those who have been affected and warned them to be vigilant. We are continuing to work closely with the authorities to identify the criminals,” AmeriCash Advance added.
