OmniVision unveils 12.7 megapixel OV12830 for high-end smartphones and tablets
Following the revelation of OmniVision‘s OV16820 and OV16825 camera sensors last week that boasted support for up to 16MP and Quad Full High Definition video capture, the California-based digital imaging company unveiled its latest addition today – the OV12830. The OV12830 is a 12.7-megapixel sensor designed specifically to meet the high quality image and video recording standards for the next generation smartphones and tablets. OmniVision explained that the OV12830 utilizes its OmniBSI-2 pixel architecture to capture 1080p high definition videos at 60 frames per second and full resolution 12-megapixel high-speed photography at 24 frames per second.
Devang Patel, Senior Product Marketing Manager at OmniVision, said that its latest product will allow manufacturers to design mobile devices with greatly improved video recording capabilities within the same space constraints required by current 8-megapixel camera modules. “We are bringing this sensor to market at a time when the next-generation smartphones and tablet cameras are moving beyond the 8-megapixel threshold,” Patel said. OmniVision mentioned via press release that its OV12830 12.7-megapixel camera chip is currently available for sampling and that massive production will commence in Q4 this year.
