Funzio, the fast-growing maker of hardcore mobile and social games, has been acquired by the Japanese mobile social network Gree. Funzio’s got three games that are currently in the App Store’s top 25 grossing apps list. These top-grossing games are namely Crime City, Modern War and Kingdom age – a game that garnered more than 1 million users during its first five days in the App Store.
In case you are unfamiliar with Gree, it’s a billion-dollar-plus company that has more than 50 million users on its hub, with almost all of them playing games on its mobile social network. The Japanese company is planning to expand its platform in the U.S. market sometime in Q2 this year.
Funzio prides its hardcore games for their wide and mass appeal to its users, particularly those who play games occasionally. Funzio’s Ken Chiu (chief executive officer) and Anil Dharni (chief operating officer) will ride Gree’s ship as senior vice presidents. Joining Gree as well are Funzo executives Ram Gudavalli and Andy Keidel.
