Safe@Sea project aims to reduce fisherman casualties
Being a fisherman does not mean you hang out by the river bank, waiting for the fish to nibble on your rod – no sir, commercial scale fisherman do risk their life and limb every single time they head out to Poseidon’s territory. Safe@Sea is a European Union funded project that intends to investigate and explore different solutions to reduce the high causality rate of fisherman who are out at sea. While select devices such as a GPS signal transmitter, a remote control which stops the engine of the boat, a distress signal transmitter, and flash lights among others will do their bit in increasing the chances of a man overboard being found, these devices will need to be in the pocket of the fisherman at all times, and more often than not, most fishermen take things for granted and do not carry it with them all the time. The Safe@Sea project intends to integrate most of the essential emergency functions into a fisherman’s clothing while maintaining current function and wear comfort.
The ideal clothing for fishermen would include emergency functions such as heating up, turning on the flashlight, and stopping the boat’s engine or even to send a distress call whenever one falls overboard – automatically, and without the need for human intervention, since one might actually black out upon hitting the water.
