RIM sued by NXP over alleged patent infringement

Based on recent reports, it would appear as though RIM is headed downhill, and as if that wasn’t enough, the company has recently been hit with a patent infringement lawsuit by Dutch semiconductor company, NXP, alleging that RIM had infringed upon their patents in the form of its Blackberry phones and Playbook tablet. The patents in question cover a pretty wide area ranging from design, data transmission amongst other features.

No word on how much NXP is asking from RIM over these alleged infringements, but the Dutch company is seeking a halt to the infringements, damages from potentially lost profits, royalties and even triple damages from what they’re calling “willful infringements”. RIM has declined to comment on the issue but has since seen its shares drop even lower after the lawsuit had been filed. It certainly looks like the manufacturer of Blackberry devices can’t catch a break and we’ll have to wonder how all of this will play out. Check back with us again in the future for more updates.
